D.A.R. Kay Memorial Iron and Steel

2007 winner – Michael Pomeroy

“In recognition for academic excellence in the Materials Science & Engineering program at McMaster University as well as for pursuing a strong interest in steelmaking technology through co-op term at IPSCO and by conducting outstanding research on slag-metal reactions while an undergraduate student.”

Michael Pomeroy is a Materials Engineering student from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. Last June, he completed the second year of his program and in the summer, he worked at McMaster University as a research student. The research was in the area of chromium oxide reduction in slags. This summer, he has been working as a co-op student at IPSCO in Regina, Saskatchewan in the Research and Development facility. The work there has so far revolved primarily around new product development. Michael has also been involved in some moisture analysis studies on the fluxes used at the IPSCO Regina facility. The steel industry is exciting to him and it is in this area that he hopes to pursue a career. Michael is grateful to MetSoc for awarding him this D.A.R.
