2007 Award Recipients

The ArcelorMittal Dofasco Award
(formerly known as The Dofasco Award)

2007 winner – Matthias Militzer

“For his important contributions to materials engineering in Canada and internationally, resulting from his research on experimental simulation and modelling of industrial processes, teaching and industrial interactions.”

Matthias Militzer is the Dofasco Chair in Advanced Steel Processing in the Department of Materials Engineering and the Director of the Centre for Metallurgical Process Engineering at the University of British Columbia (UBC). He received his Ph.D. in Metal Physics in Germany from the Academy of Science of the GDR with a Thesis on grain boundary segregation of trace elements. Subsequently, he was a visiting researcher at the Ioffe-Institute in Leningrad and in 1990 he joined the research group of J.J. Jonas at McGill University in Montreal as an International NSERC Postdoctoral Fellow. In 1993, he became a Research Associate at UBC where he has been a faculty member since 1997. Over the years he has developed a strong research programme in ferrous physical metallurgy. He is a world leading expert in modeling the microstructure evolution, in particular the austenite-ferrite phase transformation kinetics, in lowcarbon steels. A unique aspect of his research activities is that phase transformation studies are coupled with investigations on heat transfer using a pilot-scale run-out table facility. Currently, his research programme emphasizes the physical metallurgy of advanced high-strength steels and the development of novel modeling tools including phase field models. He has published more than 140 papers in refereed journals and international conference proceedings. From 2000 to 2004, he was the chairman of the Iron and Steel Section of The Metallurgical Society of CIM.
