“In recognition of his leadership and contribution to the development and maintenance of The Metallurgical Society of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum.”

Hubert King is Professor Emeritus in the Faculty of Engineering Science at the University of Western Ontario and Professor at the University of Victoria.

Dr. King earned the degrees of B.Sc. and Ph.D. in Physical Metallurgy from the University of Birmingham and the D.I.C. from Imperial College. He was a Research Scientist at Mellon Institute, Pittsburgh, PA, from 1959- 61 and was successively Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Reader in Physical Metallurgy at Imperial College, over the years from 1961-1970. He was appointed Professor of Engineering Physics at Dalhousie and TUNS in 1970 and was Head of the Department from 1988-91. He was Professor of Materials Engineering at UWO from 1991 - 1995 and moved to the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Victoria in 1996, where he is developing courses on the contribution of materials to Engineering design.

Dr. King has made significant research contributions on the effect of crystal structure and microstructure on the properties of a wide range of materials, including the tempering of steels, the stability of intermetallic phases, quantitative size-factors for solid solutions, low temperature transformations in stainless steels, electronic and superconducting ceramics, electrically induced fatigue in piezoelectrics and residual stresses in ceramic coatings. He has published over 100 papers in refereed Scientific and Engineering journals and made numerous contributions to conference proceedings. He is a Fellow of the Canadian Ceramics Society and of the Royal Society of Arts, and is a Life Member of the CIM and of APENS. Hubert was a Director of the Metallurgical Society from 1975-77, when he assisted with the reorganization into sections, and was appointed Secretary of MetSoc in 2000.
