2009 winner - Priti Wanjara

In January 1998, the MetSoc Board of Directors created the Brimacombe Award to honour the memory of Professor J. Keith Brimacombe who was an innovative giant in the field of materials process engineering. The Brimacombe Award is to recognize young achievers who have made noteworthy contributions in any of the scientific and technological disciplines relevant to MetSoc.
"In recognition of her outstanding scientific contributions in the research and development of materials and processing technologies and her enthusiastic dedication and service to the metallurgical community."
Priti Wanjara graduated from McGill University with a bachelor's degree (1993) and Ph.D. (1999) in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. In 1997, she started her professional career in the field of physical metallurgy and worked with Ivaco Rolling Mills on process development of dual phase steels. In 2002, she joined the Aerospace Manufacturing Technology Center (AMTC), one of five laboratories at the National Research Council of Canada's Institute for Aerospace Research, as an Assistant Research Officer. Her research work has focused on the application of novel joining and forming technologies for the manufacture of advanced aerospace materials. She has advanced rapidly within AMTC becoming an Associate Research Officer (2006) and Interim Group Leader of the Metallic Products Manufacturing Group (2008). As Group Leader, she manages technical research as well as scientific collaborations and business partnerships with industry, academia and other government organizations to promote emerging technologies for manufacturing applications in different industrial sectors.
Dr. Wanjara is the author or co-author of over 80 technical articles and 40 NRC reports. As a member of ASM International since 1993, she has actively participated in the Montreal Chapter, of which she is now chairperson, as well as serving as ASM Canada Council Chapter Liaison. In 2008, she received the ASM Canada Council Brian Ives Lectureship. She has also been an active member of the Metallurgical Society of CIM since 1993, including Technical Program Co-Chair and Symposium Co-Organizer, and is currently the Chair of Iron and Steel Section. She was the recipient of the MetSoc-CIM Best Paper Award in 2007.
