The ArcelorMittal Dofasco Award

Origin

The ArcelorMittal Dofasco Award was established to recognize highly significant contributions in the field of materials engineering.

Criteria

The Materials Science and Engineering Section of The Metallurgical Society of CIM administers the award.

Conditions of Award

  1. The award shall be made from time to time as circumstances warrant in recognition of highly significant contributions to the advancement of materials engineering in Canada.
  2. No more than one award may be made in any one year. The recipient must be domiciled in Canada and must be a Member of the Institute.
  3. The adjudication of the award shall be made by the Awards Committee of the Materials Science and Engineering Section of The Metallurgical Society of CIM.
  4. All nominations are solicited by a past recipient of the award, then submitted to a ballot by the Section Committee of the Materials Science and Engineering Section of The Metallurgical Society of CIM. The Section Committee then selects a nominee for recommendation to the MetSoc Awards Chair no later than February 1st of each year. Each nomination is to be accompanied by a statement giving clearly the reasons which, in the opinion of the Section, make their nominee a suitable candidate for this award.
  5. The Awards Committee of the Section shall submit its recommendation and all necessary documentation to the Chair of the Awards Committee of the Metallurgical Society. The Chair of the Awards Committee will then bring the recommendation for approval by the Board of Directors of the Society at the Spring meeting. The Chair of the Awards Committee will then advise the awardee.
  6. The award, including the testimonial, shall be presented at the Awards Banquet of the Conference of Metallurgists by a Dofasco representative.
  7. The Society may elect to invite the recipient to deliver a special lecture during the Conference.
A nomination stands for three (3) years.

D.A.R. Kay Memorial Iron & Steel Section Award

Origin

The Iron and Steel Section of the Metallurgical Society of CIM recognizes the importance of relevant industrial experience in the curriculum of undergraduate engineering and technology students. Professor D. A. R. Kay of McMaster University had a special interest in steel metallurgy and education, and the Iron and Steel Section of MetSoc offers an annual travel award to an outstanding Canadian undergraduate student in the materials/metallurgical engineering and technology field. The Award is to assist students, to a maximum of $2,500, with travel, relocation and living expenses incurred because they had to move to pursue a summer or other work term in an iron and steel-related business anywhere in Canada, or to a maximum of $4,000 for travel and living expenses outside of Canada.

Application Procedure

This Award is available to students currently enrolled in a second or third year of a materials/process metallurgy/metallurgical engineering or technology program at a Canadian University or college.

The application deadline is April 30 for a work term to be undertaken within the calendar year. Applications must include:

1. A professional resume and academic transcript;
2. A letter of recommendation from the Chair of the student's academic department;
3. An offer of employment from the company providing the work term.

Morris Cohen Award

Origin

The award was established in 1994 by the Materials Performance and Integrity Section of the Metallurgical Society of CIM in recognition of significant contributions to the advancement of corrosion science and engineering in Canada. The award honours the memory of the eminent Canadian Scientist, Morris Cohen, renowned expert in the field of electrochemistry.

Conditions of Award

  1. The award shall be made to an individual in recognition of significant contribution to the advancement of corrosion science and engineering in Canada. The recipient must have made his or her contribution while working in Canada, but need not be a Canadian citizen.
  2. The award may be presented from time to time as circumstances warrant, but not more than one award shall be made in any given year.
  3. A candidate must be nominated by at least one member of the CIM. Membership on the Award Committee does not preclude the right to make a nomination.
  4. Candidates may be nominated from industry, government or universities. Nominees shall fulfill one or more of the following criteria:
    1. Candidates have developed an industrial corrosion control process of recognized commercial importance;
    2. Have made significant contribution to fundamental corrosion science and/or engineering;
    3. Have had a distinguished career as an educator in the field of corrosion science and/or engineering and developed technical training courses in that field;
    4. Have promoted or stimulated corrosion science and/or engineering research and development.
  5. The first call for nominations shall be made by October 1 of the year preceeding the year of the Award.
  6. Closing date for nominations shall be February 1 of the year of the Award.
  7. The (Section) Award Committee shall consider the nominations and reach a decision on the selection of recipient prior to March 15 of the year of the Award. The Chair of the (Section) Award Committee shall report this decision to the Section Chair and forward the necessary documentation to the Chair of the Society's Award Committee for presentation and approval of the Board of Directors Spring meeting. The Chair of the MetSoc Awards Committee will then advise the recipient.
  8. The award, including the testimonial, shall be presented at the Awards Banquet of the Conference of Metallurgists. The Section may elect to invite the recipient to deliver a special lecture during the Conference of Metallurgists.   9. When reasonably possible, the recipient shall be expected to receive the Award in person at a meeting of the Section. At that time, the recipient shall speak on a subject of major interest to him/her in the field of corrosion science or engineering.

Light Metals Best Paper Award

Origin

The award was established by the Light Metals Section of the Metallurgical Society of CIM.

Criteria

The Light Metals Best Paper Award's nomination criteria are the prerogative of the Light Metals Section.

Conditions of Award

  1. Each session Chair selects his session's best paper from the Proceedings of the previous year's Conference of Metallurgist.
  2. Each nomination is reviewed by the award subcommittee of the Section.
  3. The final choice is ratified by the Section.
  4. Notice of the winner is sent to MetSoc Award Chair.
  5. When reasonably possible, the recipient shall be expected to receive the Award in person at the Light Metals Luncheon during the annual Conference of Metallurgists.

Non-Ferrous Pyrometallurgy Award

Origin

The Non-Ferrous Pyrometallurgy Best Paper Award was established by the Non-Ferrous Pyrometallurgy Section to recognize the best paper on this topic published in either the CIM Bulletin or the Canadian Metallurgical Quarterly. The Non-Ferrous Pyrometallurgy Section of the Metallurgical Society of CIM administers the award.

Criteria

The Non-Ferrous Pyrometallurgy Best Paper Award's nomination criteria are the prerogative of the Non-Ferrous Pyrometallurgy Section.

Conditions of Award

  1. The Section selects the best paper from the previous year's CIM Bulletin or CMQ.
  2. Each nomination is reviewed by the award subcommittee of the Section.
  3. The final choice is ratified by the Section.
  4. Notice of the winner is sent to MetSoc Award Chair.

Materials Science Best Paper Award

Origin An award is made annually for the best paper appearing in the Canadian Metallurgical Quarterly for the Volume associated with the previous year. The selection is made by the Editor, Associate Editors and such advisors as they wish to appoint. The Award consists of a plaque and a cash prize of $500. The Award is usually presented at the Canadian Materials Science Conference or the Conference of Metallurgists.

The Sherritt Hydrometallurgy Award


Criteria

The MetSoc Hydrometallurgy Section administers the Sherritt Hydrometallurgy award.

Conditions of Award

The award is presented at the MetSoc Awards Banquet when the Hydrometallurgy Meeting is part of the Conference of Metallurgists, alternatively it is presented at the Annual Hydrometallurgy Meeting.
  1. The award shall be made from time to time as circumstances warrant in recognition of significant contributions to the advancement of hydrometallurgy through research, plant design and operations, and education.
  2. No more than one award may be made in any one year.
  3. It shall be awarded to a CIM member who is either a Canadian citizen or an individual who, while resident in Canada, made significant contributions to the advancement of hydrometallurgy.
  4. Nominees for this award shall not have reached the age of 50 years by January 1st of the year in which the nomination becomes effective.
  5. The adjudication of the award shall be made by the Awards Committee of the Hydrometallurgy Section of the Metallurgical Society of CIM. The Committee shall consist of (a) an Awards Chair, appointed from the Hydrometallurgy Section, and either a previous Award winner or otherwise ineligible to receive the award; (b) five immediately previous Award winners. If the Award Chair is one of these, the sixth most recent will join the Committee.
  6. Nominations for the award shall be made in writing by not fewer than three (3) members of CIM, to the Section Awards Chair. Each nomination shall be accompanied by a testimonial statement giving clearly the reasons which make the nominee a suitable candidate. Other supporting data (e.g. curriculum vitae) can be included if desired.
  7. Nominees shall remain in nomination for three years, and at the end of that period shall be eligible for renomination in the manner specified by Conditions 4 and 6.
  8. At the completion of the Section Awards Committee adjudication, the Section Awards Chair will notify the Hydrometallurgy Section Chair of the Committee's selection and forward the necessary documentation to the Chair of the Awards Committee for approval at the Board of Directors Spring Meeting. The Chair of the MetSoc Awards Committee will then advise the recipient.
  9. The award, including the testimonial, shall be presented at the Annual Hydrometallurgy Meeting. The Section may elect to invite the recipient to deliver a special lecture during the Meeting.
