GENERAL CRITERIA AND PROCEDURE

(applicable to ArcelorMittal Dofasco, Morris Cohen and Sherritt Hydrometallurgy Awards only).

  1. Each Section award shall be made from time to time as circumstances warrant with no more than one award recipient per year.

  2. All nominees must be Members of the Institute and their contributions must be of benefit to Canada (see award description for specific contributions necessary).

  3. Sections are responsible for maintaining nomination confidentiality. Nominations involving candidate participation may jeopardize the candidacy and result in rejection.

  4. Section Chairs are responsible for verifying that all conditions of the award have been satisfied and all procedures were properly followed in making the nomination.

  5. The adjudication of the award shall be made by the Section Awards Committee if one exists or by the Section Board Committee of The Metallurgical Society of CIM itself.

    1. The Awards Committee of the Hydrometallurgy Section of the Metallurigcal Society of CIM shall consist of an Awards Chairman, appointed from within the Hydrometallurgy Section, and either a previous Sherritt Hydrometallurgy Award winner or someone otherwise ineligible receive the award and the five immediately previous Sherritt Hydrometallurgy Award winners. If the Awards Chairman is one of these, the sixth most recent award winner will join the committee.

  6. Nominations to the Section should come from members across the field of the award. The section committee should work to ensure that potential candidates are brought forward.

  7. All nominations must be accompanied by the endorsement of not fewer than (5) CIM members and a minimum of three personal testimonial statements clearly giving the reasons which make the nominee a suitable candidate. Other supporting data (e.g. curriculum vitae) can be included, and is encouraged. All nominations must be forwarded to the Section Awards Committee Chairman or the Section Chair (whichever is applicable). All nominations will stand for 3 years.

  8. The nominations are then put to vote by ballot by the committee.  The ballot must include a "no award" option.

  9. The Section Committee then selects a nominee for recommendation to the Section Chair no later than February 1st of each year. The Section Chair, after ensuring that all conditions of the award have been satisfied and that the procedures were followed, in turn forwards the recommendation and its supporting documentation to the MetSoc Awards Chair.

  10. The MetSoc Awards Chair will then bring the candidates forward for ratification by the MetSoc Awards Committee. The Committee is not required to comment on the qualifications of the selected candidates but is responsible for verifying that proper procedures were followed.

  11. The MetSoc Awards Chair then brings the nominees forward for ratification by the Board of Directors of the Society at the Spring Meeting. The Metallurgical Society office will then advise the recipients of their award.

  12. The award shall be presented at the Awards Banquet of the Conference of Metallurgists or at the Annual Meeting of the Section.
