Light metals, whether it is aluminum, magnesium, or other light element have seen their utilization ever increasing over the past decades. Whatever the very specific properties offered by this class of materials, the possibilities for new applications taking advantage of their particular characteristics remains numerous. Despite the downturn in economy recently experienced, interest towards lights metals is there to last and will even further develop in the upcoming decades. Light metal section is therefore proud to be present in Vancouver 2010 and will hold its symposium under the title of “Challenges facing light metals industry”. A minimum of four sessions are planned. Various aspects of these performing materials are to be covered among which are their production and casting technology, thermo mechanical processing, corrosion resistance, applications, recycling, environment, microstructure and mechanical properties.
