1.1 THE CONFERENCE OF METALLURGISTS
The Conference of Metallurgists is held each year in August. It is an established international conference consisting of
symposia which attract experts from all over the world. It also includes scientific and technical workshops of extremely
high caliber, a trade show and industrial visits. Students are encouraged to participate through technical presentations,
attendance of section meeting and special events, such as the student-industry mixer.
In 2011 the 50th Anniversary Conference will be held in Montreal, Quebec. For more information on the conference

- General MetSoc Funding
The student activities budget allocates up to $5,000.00 Cdn in travel funding for student members of CIM enrolled in a Canadian university who wish to attend the
conference. Requests are pooled and a limited number of students are selected to receive funds based on order of application, travel distance (minimum 500km), and type of participation at COM.
Registration and accommodations are not included. Students are advised of final decision in early September (or about one month prior to the conference).
To apply, please forward the completed application form to the MetSoc office.
COM Student Travel Policy
All student members of CIM enrolled in a Canadian University travelling more
than 500KM are eligible for student travel funding.
- Funding From the Technical Sections
- Mineral Sciences and Engineering Section:
This section has a budget of $1000.00 Cdn per year to help students in Mineral, Mining and Metallurgical Engineering
to attend the Conference of Metallurgists, as long as a Mineral Sciences and Engineering Section sponsored symposium
or general session is scheduled and the student is expecting to present his/her paper in one of those sessions.
The program covers the registration fee only. Send requests for funding to MetSoc's administrator
using the application form.
- Non-Ferrous Pyrometallurgy:
$500.00 Cdn will be allocated per student member presenting either an oral paper
or a poster in Non-Ferrous Pyrometallurgy, at the COM, to a maximum of 10
students. Send requests for funding to MetSoc's administrator using the
application form.
1.2 ANNUAL CIM HYDROMETALLURGICAL MEETING
The Annual Hydrometallurgical Meeting has always been regarded as the broadest forum for the exchange of new ideas and
is an excellent occasion to meet old friends and colleagues. In addition, in recent years, the accompanying short course
has been perceived as one of the finest in the area, and is again intended to be so on this occasion.
Travel funding for students
The Hydrometallurgy Section provides travel funding for graduate students in
the field of Hydrometallurgy who need to travel to attend conferences.
Students must attend the conference to be eligible for the award.
The distance that the student travels must be significant enough to require assistance.
Maximum funding is $1000.00 per student.

funding application please go to

1.3 THE CANADIAN MATERIALS SCIENCE CONFERENCE
The Canadian Materials Science Conference (CMSC) is usually held in mid-June at a Canadian university. The conference
provides an informal atmosphere for 150 delegates and encourages wide-ranging participation from graduate students
while bringing to the conference distinguished researchers from the United States and abroad for the more sharply
focused workshops and symposia. The CMSC invites research papers on the processing, microstructure, and properties of
materials. Submissions are organized into oral and poster presentations. To encourage student participation, financial
assistance is provided by the Metallurgical Society of CIM for students traveling more than 500 km to the conference.
The CMSC traces its beginning to 1951 when the Canadian metal physics conference was founded as an annual meeting at the
Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston by Professor T.S. Hutchison of RMC and Professor W.C. Winegard of the
University of Toronto. The conference has slowly evolved over the years. In 1976, a concurrent Canadian metal chemistry
conference was begun through the efforts of professor J.M. Toguri of the University of Toronto and Professor C.W. Bale of
Ecole Polytechnique. In 1989, the more inclusive and more appropriate name of Canadian materials science conference was
adopted. Since then, the conference has matured from the original three-day format to include a week long meeting with
poster sessions, workshops and symposia with published proceedings. The 23rd CMSC will be held at
the School of Engineering at UBC's Okanagan Campus in beautiful Kelowna,
British Columbia, Canada in June 2010. For information on abstracts
submission and look at the website at:
http://2011cmsc.ok.ubc.ca/
For students traveling more than 500 km to the conference, funding is available on a first come first serve basis from the Metalllurgy
and Materials Society of CIM. Students must present a request for funding to
MetSoc's administrator using the form below.
Applications must be made by May 15th.
