1.1 THE CONFERENCE OF METALLURGISTS
The Conference of Metallurgists is held each year in August. It is an established international conference consisting of
symposia which attract experts from all over the world. It also includes scientific and technical workshops of extremely
high caliber, a trade show and industrial visits. Students are encouraged to participate through technical presentations,
attendance of section meeting and special events, such as the student-industry mixer.
In 2009 the Conference will be held in Sudbury, Ontario. For more information on the conference
please go to http://www.metsoc.org/com2009
TRAVEL FUNDING FOR THE COM
- General MetSoc Funding
The student activities budget allocates up to $4,000.00 Cdn in travel funding for student members of CIM who wish to attend the
conference. Requests are pooled and funds are distributed to cover a fair proportion of each student's travel costs.
Registration and accommodations are not included. Priority is given to students presenting a
paper or poster, and to Canadian
student members traveling within Canada.
COM Student Travel Policy
All student members of CIM are eligible for student travel funding. To apply, please mail or fax to the MetSoc
adminstrator the following application form.
The deadline for application is June 15th. If you apply before June 15th, and
are presenting a paper or poster, a portion of your travel expenses may be reimbursed
(by least expensive/reasonable means).
Funding will be considered first for presenters and second for attendees. Students are advised of final decision in early August.
- COM Student Monitors
Students can become part of the COM as student monitors for technical sessions. Its an excellent opportunity to network and earn some extra cash. For more details

1.2 ANNUAL CIM HYDROMETALLURGICAL MEETING
The Annual Hydrometallurgical Meeting has always been regarded as the broadest forum for the exchange of new ideas and
is an excellent occasion to meet old friends and colleagues. In addition, in recent years, the accompanying short course
has been perceived as one of the finest in the area, and is again intended to be so on this occasion.
For information on this year's Hydrometallurgy meeting please go to

TRAVEL FUNDING FOR THE ANNUAL HYDROMETALLURGY MEETING
The Hydrometallurgy Section provides travel funding for graduate students in the field of Hydrometallurgy who need to travel to attend conferences. The funding is calculated according to the following formula:
$500.00 per student attending the conference. Students must attend the conference to be eligible for the award.
The distance that the student travels must be significant enough to require assistance.
An extra $500.00 is available for students presenting a paper. Posters are not eligible
$200.00 to attend a short-course on Hydrometallurgy
Maximum funding is $1000.00 per student.
The application should include:
1. A summary of the student's research project 2. A letter of support from
his/her thesis supervisor
To be eligible, students should be registered in a
Canadian university at the time of the conference, in a Masters or PhD
program related to the field of Hydrometallurgy. Applications should be sent
prior to 30 June in the year of the conference.

1.3 THE CANADIAN MATERIALS SCIENCE CONFERENCE
The Canadian Materials Science Conference (CMSC) is usually held in mid-June at a Canadian university. The conference
provides an informal atmosphere for 150 delegates and encourages wide-ranging participation from graduate students
while bringing to the conference distinguished researchers from the United States and abroad for the more sharply
focused workshops and symposia. The CMSC invites research papers on the processing, microstructure, and properties of
materials. Submissions are organized into oral and poster presentations. To encourage student participation, financial
assistance is provided by the Metallurgical Society of CIM for students traveling more than 500 km to the conference.
The CMSC traces its beginning to 1951 when the Canadian metal physics conference was founded as an annual meeting at the
royal military college of Canada in Kingston by Professor T.S. Hutchison of RMC and Professor W.C. Winegard of the
University of Toronto. The conference has slowly evolved over the years. In 1976, a concurrent Canadian metal chemistry
conference was begun through the efforts of professor J.M. Toguri of the University of Toronto and Professor C.W. Bale of
Ecole Polytechnique. In 1989, the more inclusive and more appropriate name of Canadian materials science conference was
adopted. Since then, the conference has matured from the original three-day format to include a week long meeting with
poster sessions, workshops and symposia with published proceedings. The 21st CMSC will be held at Queen's University
in Kingston, Ontario, Canada in June 2009. Abstracts must be submitted before March 1st, 2009.
For more information, email all questions to
metsoc@cim.org or
pilkey@me.queensu.ca
For students traveling more than 500 km to the conference, funding is available on a first come first serve basis from the Metallurgical
Society of CIM. Students must present a request for funding to MetSoc's administrator:
