  • CHAPTERS IN CANADA
Students who are members or are becoming members, may wish to communicate with their school chapter. CIM Chapters organize seminars, banquets and field trips. Here are the Faculty Advisors for the existing chapters:

Dalhousie University - George Jarjoura, (george.jarjoura@dal.ca)
McGill University - Mathieu Brochu, (Mathieu.brochu@mcgill.ca)
    Queen's University - Chris Pickles, (Chris.Pickles@mine.queensu.ca)
    Universite Laval - Marc-Andre Fortin, (marc-andre.fortin@gmn.ulaval.ca)

If your school does not have a Chapter, contact the MetSoc Student Services chair Eduard Guerra to help you create one.

  • IMPORTANT CHANGES TO OUR EXISTING CIM-TMS JOINT CHAPTERS
With the CIM council removing the student membership fees, the joint TMS-CIM program will no longer be accepting new members in 2009. Present membership renewals and new members will be honoured for their full year of benefits and services with TMS however no new joint members will be accepted at this time. As many of our students are members of the Materials Advantage program, we hope as well, to become associated with this exciting student program.

The CIM portion of the Chapters themselves will continue to exist and we will continue to support Chapters in their field trips, invited seminars and recruitment funding.

  • MEET YOUR NEW STUDENT SERVICE CHAIR - EDUARD GUERRA
Eduard Guerra As your new Student Chair I'd like to take this opportunity to welcome our new and returning student members and introduce myself. I'm Ed Guerra and I'm an Assistant Professor at Laurentian University's School of Engineering where I teach and conduct research, mainly, in area of hydrometallurgy. Prior to joining the faculty of the School of Engineering, I worked for several years in both industrial research and operations, and one of my goals as Student Services Chair is to use that experience and perspective to find ways to increase student-industry interactions. My educational background spans from extractive metallurgy to materials science; My undergraduate degree is from Laurentian's Extractive Metallurgical Engineering program while my M.A.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees are from the University of British Columbia in the Department of Metals and Materials Engineering. At MetSoc I have also accepted to work on the Organizing committee of COM 2009 in Sudbury. I encourage students to participate in the Poster session and as volunteers to our conference.

  • CHAPTERS - ORGANIZE A SEMINAR with a CIM Distinguished Lecturer
Last MLINK issue, we reminded our Student Chapters that they can obtain a great speaker by requesting a CIM Distinguished Lecturer. Did you know that this year one of the Distinguished lecturer is a former MetSoc President and the 2007 recipient of the Airey Award? You can read a short biography of him on our Awards page.
Carlos Diaz is not alone, there are four other great Lecturers that you can secure for your School event. The Lecturers are available to visit Student Chapters starting in September and it is recommended that you make your request as early as possible as they are in high demand. For more info, contact Robertina Pillo: programs@cim.org, Tel.: (514) 939-2710, ext. 1316 or make your request online at http://www.cim.org/awards/distinguishedLecturers.cfm

  • CMSC 2008 - THE STUDENT CONFERENCE IN MATERIALS
The 2008 CMSC conference at University of Alberta was a great success. Thank you to the Chairman Reg Eadie and Tom Etsell and the entire executive committee Ken Cadien, John Nychka, Adrian Gerlich and Hao Zhang. The conference held 5 workshops, 3 Technical sessions and social events enjoyed by all the students. The Conference had more workshops than usual and had a strong support from local industry which attracted many more students.

Come join us for CMSC 2009 in June at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario.

  • Got news to share?
