Sergei A. Shipilov
“In recognition of his sustained leadership in the area of
corrosion research and education in materials science and
corrosion.”
Dr. Sergei A. Shipilov is currently a consultant with Metallurgical
Consulting Services and an adjunct professor in the Department of
Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at Ryerson University. He
obtained his PhD at the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the USSR
Academy of Sciences in 1987. After obtaining his doctorate, he worked at
the Institute of Physical Chemistry as a research scientist, was founding
director of the Laboratory for Physical and Chemical Research in Fracture
and taught in the Faculty of Materials Science at Moscow State University.
He moved to Canada in 1999, and then spent several years on faculty at
the University of Calgary. The editor of the two-volume “Environment-
Induced Cracking of Materials” (Elsevier, 2007), he has authored more
than 80 refereed research papers and has given over 50 invited
presentations, including seven plenary and keynote lectures at major
conferences. He is active internationally, serving as advisor or invited
lecturer on technical matters to research groups, government agencies,
and companies in Belgium, Canada, China, Portugal, Russia and the USA.
He has been a visiting professor of materials science and engineering at
five universities around the world. In 2006, he served on the Nominating
Committee of ASM International. He received the M. Brian Ives
Lectureship Award of ASM International (2005), the Distinguished Service
Award of NACE International (2007), and the ASM-IIM Visiting
Lectureship Award (2007). He is listed in several biographical directories
including “Who’s Who in Science and Engineering,” “Who’s Who in
America,” and “Who’s Who in the World.”
