in focus

Dear Fellow Members and Friends of MetSoc:
Welcome to the first issue of our e-newsletter!
George Demopoulos
The focus of this and all other issues to follow of our
all-new e-newsletter is you, the greater MetSoc family! How could it be different?
It is the members that have made MetSoc the vibrant internationally recognized
CIM-constituent Society for nearly 50 years now and it is first you that we
want to reach out with the launching of this e-newsletter. Our membership
(some 1200 strong) is as diverse as are the professional activities in which
metallurgical, materials and other allied groups of scientists and engineers
are engaged in. The grand majority of you work in industry while a quarter
of our membership is students. Our present is strong and vibrant and our future
looks even brighter! MetSoc aspires to continue being considered the preferred
professional Society for all of you and reach out and attract new members.
Your help in spreading the “word of welcome” by forwarding this e-newsletter
to fellow metallurgists and materials scientists and processing engineers
is greatly appreciated.
The industrial world of metals and materials keeps changing
along with all other technological and economic changes taking place around
us. The pace of change and intensity of competition increases. The society
demands better products and cleaner and more efficient technologies. All metals
and materials professionals from their different posts of engagement, being
industry, government or academia, work to meet the new challenges. MetSoc
remains committed to serve all of you by offering world class relevant technical
programming and publications that contribute to professional advancement and
excellence.
All our Society’s activities (annual COMs and other meetings,
publications etc) are organized by volunteers with the help of three dedicated
staff members. It is through our Technical Sections that these activities
are discussed and planned. Why don’t you consider joining the Section that
best meets your interests? Please refer to our website (www.metsoc.org)
under “About MetSoc/Board
of Directors” for contact and other information.
In closing, I invite you to browse through this inaugural
issue and write to us with your impressions. We look forward to see many of
you at the upcoming COM2007 in Toronto featuring Cu2007- A truly premier international
meeting. Thank you all for your continuing support. I would also like to thank
all contributors to this issue and in particular
Ronona
Saunders, our e-newsletter coordinator.
