Dear Fellow Members and Friends of MetSoc:

  George Demopoulos

  Past President and Founding Editor

Here is the second issue of our all new e-newsletter, mlink! The mission of mlink is to connect MetSoc to its diverse membership and wider national and international metallurgical and materials community. The focus of this issue is the smashing success (over 1000 delegates) of our COM 2007 meeting that hosted Cu2007 with its associated Metal Trade Show in Toronto and our 2007 Award recipients. Joel Kapusta and Chris Twigge-Molecey, Chairs respectively of COM 2007 and Cu2007, are thanked for this great success as they are the co-sponsoring international societies: IIMCh (Chile), GDMB (Germany), MMIJ (Japan), TMS and SME (USA).

Recognition of excellence is one of the "raisons d’ętre" of our Society. We are pleased to recognize in this issue the 2007 MetSoc Award recipients. A Call for Nominations for the 2008 Awards has been issued. Please visit the RECOGNITION OF EXCELLENCE page for more details.

MetSoc remains committed to continue offering world-class relevant technical programming and publications. Please refer to the MEETINGS pages of the newsletter for the planned COM 2008 Meeting in Winnipeg and the Call for Papers. Under PUBLICATIONS you will find info on the new Copper 2007 books and some of the papers scheduled to be published in the next issue(s) of CMQ-MetSoc’s flagship journal.

One of the missions for our Society is to continue attracting students to our meetings and our profession in general by offering distinct advantages to them. Some of these advantages are: support for field trips, recognition in the form of scholarships and awards and last but not least opportunities for networking with fellow students in other Universities and professionals in our industry. Please visit the STUDENTS pages for more information.

All our Society’s activities (annual COMs and other meetings, publications etc) are organized by volunteers with the help of three dedicated staff members. It is through our Technical Sections that these activities are discussed and planned. Why don’t you consider joining the Section that best meets your interests? Please refer to our website (www.metsoc.org) under “About MetSoc/Board of Directors” for contact and other information.

Stay connected! Ronona Saunders , our e-newsletter coordinator and I will be pleased to hear your comments and suggestions. Thank you.
