1.3 THE CANADIAN MATERIALS SCIENCE CONFERENCE
The Canadian Materials Science Conference (CMSC) is usually held in mid-June at a Canadian university. The conference
provides an informal atmosphere for 150 delegates and encourages wide-ranging participation from graduate students
while bringing to the conference distinguished researchers from the United States and abroad for the more sharply
focused workshops and symposia. The CMSC invites research papers on the processing, microstructure, and properties of
materials. Submissions are organized into oral and poster presentations. To encourage student participation, financial
assistance is provided by the Metallurgical Society of CIM for students traveling more than 500 km to the conference.
The CMSC traces its beginning to 1951 when the Canadian metal physics conference was founded as an annual meeting at the
royal military college of Canada in Kingston by Professor T.S. Hutchison of RMC and Professor W.C. Winegard of the
University of Toronto. The conference has slowly evolved over the years. In 1976, a concurrent Canadian metal chemistry
conference was begun through the efforts of professor J.M. Toguri of the University of Toronto and Professor C.W. Bale of
Ecole Polytechnique. In 1989, the more inclusive and more appropriate name of Canadian materials science conference was
adopted. Since then, the conference has matured from the original three-day format to include a week long meeting with
poster sessions, workshops and symposia with published proceedings. The 20th CMSC will be held at the University
of Alberta,
Edmonton, Alberta, Canada in June 2008. Abstracts must be submitted before March 1st, 2008.
For more information, email all questions to
metsoc@cim.org or
reg.eadie@ualberta.ca
For students traveling more than 500 km to the conference, funding is available on a first come first serve basis from the Metallurgical
Society of CIM. Students must present a request for funding to MetSoc's administrator:

2. CIM FIELD TRIPS
|
2.1 METSOC FIELD TRIP FUNDING
CIM will provide funding to every school for one field trip per year. CIM will allocate $25.00 Cdn per Joint Student
Chapter member participating in the field trip. An official record of attendance must be presented to MetSoc's
membership coordinator once the field trip is completed. Payment will be made at that time. There is a limit of
$800 per school and a maximum budget for the program. First-come-first-served. Only one cheque is issued per
school, per year.(Click here for application form)
2.2 MINERALS SCIENCES AND ENGINEERING SECTION FUNDING

3. TMS CONFERENCES
|
TMS offers a variety of regularly scheduled technical conferences targeting the science and engineering of minerals,
metals, and materials. These meetings provide a forum for the exchange of technical information, as well as an opportunity
for informal discussions and networking with colleagues working in academia, industry, and government. International in
scope, TMS conferences are often co-sponsored by other societies, providing an added potential for information exchange in
specific disciplines. As a benefit of membership, registration fees for TMS student members are either free or substantially
reduced. Info: Meeting Services, Tel.: (724) 776-9000, ext. 243; Fax (724) 776-3770.
For mor information on upcoming TMS meetings please visit
http://www.tms.org/Meetings/Meetings.asp
3.1 SHORT COURSES
All five TMS technical divisions sponsor short courses at the TMS annual meeting and/or regionally to provide attendees with a
concentrated continuing education program on timely subject matter. The courses
may provide enlightenment on an emerging technology,
act as a refresher, or review a particular topic. Courses may be technical or geared to general professional development, such as
customer service or quality management. The majority of TMS courses are related to technical symposia and are often held one or two
days prior to the start of the meeting to avoid overlap with technical programming. Regional continuing education courses are held
in a selected geographic area where a specific industrial emphasis is concentrated.
Info: Education, Tel.: (724) 776-9000 Fax: (724) 776-3770; Email: raabe@tms.org.
3.2 STUDENT/FACULTY MIXERS
A part of both the TMS annual meeting and the TMS fall meeting, the student/faculty mixer is an informal social gathering
among students and faculty advisors from various colleges and universities, and various leaders in the materials field
from research, industry, and academia. Music and refreshments are provided free of charge. The mixer, an excellent networking
opportunity for students and faculty, customarily concludes the TMS student forum on careers held during materials week.
Info: Member Services, Tel.: (724) 776-9000 Fax: (724) 776-3770.
3.3 STUDENT MONITORS
TMS student members may defray expenses while attending TMS meetings and symposia by serving as a monitor
during sessions. Student monitors operate audio/visual equipment and tabulate attendance for varied fees.
Info: Member Services, Tel.: (724) 776-9000, ext. 259; Fax: (724) 776-3770.
3.4 STUDENT CHAPTER TRAVEL REIMBURSEMENTS
Each active TMS Student Chapter is allotted $500 per year to use for travel-reimbursement funds for TMS student
members to attend the TMS annual meeting or MS&T. Faculty advisors may
distribute these funds at their discretion to student members who apply for reimbursement. Info: Member Services, Tel.:
(724) 776-9000, ext. 259; Fax: (724) 776-3770; Email:
