1. THE ROLE OF STUDENTS

Recognizing the value of integrating engineering students into the membership of a professional organization, CIM currently provides metallurgy and materials science students with significant opportunities to accelerate their professional development by interacting with respected members of industry, academia, and government; exploring avenues of publication; and attending local and national meetings which attract engineering experts from throughout the world.

The advantages of joining CIM includes receiving information on the numerous scholarships available through both organizations, their travel grants, reduced prices on publications and conferences, poster sessions, essay competitions, career support, and advice. Student Chapters will profit from start-up funding, field trip assistance, student-industry mixers, lecturer support, and Student Chapter competitions. Student members will have electronic subscriptions to the CIM Magazine.

Every person gets a different set of benefits from membership. The value of benefits to individuals cannot be judged on the dollar cost of the annual dues. Important value comes from association among the members of the organization, the free exchange of new ideas, new technologies, novel solutions to everyday industrial problems, and unique approaches to research.

CIM / MetSoc has selfish motives in recruiting student members - we are proud of our profession in terms of what it has meant to us as individuals and its contributions to society as a whole. We want to make certain that its worthwhile endeavours continue; therefore, we promote membership to today's students - tomorrow's professionals.
