In the second stage of the Magnola Process, magnesium is extracted through an acid leach of the serpentine and
filtration. A magnesium chloride solution known as brine is produced along with a silica and iron residue. The
brine goes through further purification steps to remove the impurities, particularly the residual iron, nickel,
boron and manganese. These are extracted from the brine by precipitation. The residue is returned to a secure
tailings pond specifically created for this purpose and located on the existent tailings.
