Raw Materials

Most of Dofasco's raw materials, including iron ore and coal, arrive at the Hamilton docks by ship. Recycled steel is shipped to Dofasco by rail and truck. All of Dofasco's requirements for iron ore are provided in pellet form from mines and associated pelletizing plants in which Dofasco has ownership interests.

Coke Production

Coal is converted to "coke" in Dofasco's coke ovens. Impurities are removed and sold as by-products. The remaining pure carbon or metallurgical coke is used in the blast furnace. The coke acts as the main source of energy (along with oil) in the blast furnace, while limestone is used to remove impurities.
