Médaille d’argent

La Médaille d’argent, initiée en 1986, est décernée à des personnes qui ont bâti, soutenu et développé la Société de la métallurgie et des matériaux de l’ICM et qui en ont fait une organisation solide de renommée internationale.

La Médaille d’argent sert à récompenser des individus qui ont contribué de manière significative et soutenue, la croissance de MetSoc.

Mihaiela M. Isac,

Associate Director of McGill Metals Processing Centre
McGill University

Citation: In recognition of her significant research accomplishments and for her tireless efforts and leadership within the Light Metals Section, for the development of MetSoc of CIM.

Mihaiela M. Isac has spent a full career in academia, rising to Full Professor of Physical Metallurgy at the National Technical University of Bucharest, before emigrating to Montreal, and being accepted at McGill University. Mihaiela became the Associate Director of the McGill Metals Processing Centre in 2011, and the CEO and President of MetSim Inc. in 2012. She holds B.Eng., and M.Eng., followed by a Doctorate Degree in metallurgy at the National Technical University of Bucharest, Romania. She specialised in High-Resolution Electron Microscopy at the Technical University of Delft, the Netherlands.

Her professional interests are related to thermodynamics, and kinetics of phase transformations of crystalline and amorphous alloys, and high-temperature process metallurgy of ferrous, and non-ferrous metals and alloys. Her research on the development of the Horizontal Single Belt Casting technology applied to aluminum, steels, and copper alloys represents a significant breakthrough in the high temperature processing of thin strip products. She is the author of 4 textbooks and four Laboratory Training Manuals for students. She is the author, or co-author of three book Chapters and editor of eight Symposia Proceedings. She published more than 300 papers in refereed journals and conference proceedings.

Mihaiela was Chair of Light Metals Section of MetSoc of CIM for two consecutive terms, she organized and chaired 5 Light Metals Symposia, and co-chaired other 3 Symposia for metallurgical and materials community, events organized in connection with important Conferences such as COM, MS&T, IMPC, etc.

She is the recipient of significant awards, among them 3 MetSoc Best Paper Awards, 2011 NSERC Leo DERIKX Award for Innovation, 2013 MetSoc XSTRATA Award, 2021 FIMMM, and 2021 CIM Fellowship Award.
